Joy that Remains

Yesterday we brought the semester to a close with our final exam. It's hard to believe that five months ago I took the biggest leap of faith in my life to date by coming to New Orleans to do this program. And now, I have an extra family, complete immersion into the different facets of medicine, and exponential personal growth to show for it. MS in Pharmacology and 2018 medical school application cycle here we come!

Spending the first part of this Christmas holiday season with my classmates and in the community has been so special. We did a class gift exchange and the level of creativity revealed in these gifts was unparalleled. I also had the opportunity to serve this past Sunday as a kids volunteer for a church that is very much a hub for the fairgrounds community. As a result, I had the opportunity to engage with kids and families of varying nationalities and from so many walks of life. We do this to give parents an opportunity to be recharged, and to be a part of the village that is raising each child. In One Hope Kids we sing, play, and do our best to get kids to really think about the purpose of life and faith by teaching. But every so often the kids will turn around and teach us something instead. Last Sunday, we were discussing how sad the end of the Christmas season can be. The lights are taken down, decorations are packed up, and with their removal it seems that the light-hearted wonder vanishes. But one of our kids reminded us that we can keep that joy year round if we hold onto Jesus. That way, December joy will stick around for all the days to come.

Regardless of what you believe I challenge you this season to think about what your one thing is. What can you hold onto that will cause your heart to remain on fire in every season? Find out, and let that set the trajectory for the new year.

See you all in January.
